Similar to the process of identifying the photographers style, use a numbering system to tally up the numbers to determine the personality of the photographer

• The first peak into the photographers personality is his website.

• What colors did he/she choose?
  • Bright colors apparent =Mr. Popular (Extrovert)
  • All dark colors = Nerd (Introvert)
• Is it a clean design or all over the place?
  • Clean =Workaholic
  • All over the place = Slacker
• Does it look like everyone else website?
  • Looks like everyone else = Slacker and Follower
  • Unique = Mr. Popular and Workaholic
• Look at the about page and read his/her blurb.
  • Is the blurb boring?
    • Boring = Slacker and Follower
    • Captivating = Mr. Popular and Workaholic
• Check out the photographers self portrait
  • Is the image a simple headshot?
    • Simple and plain = Follower and Slacker
    • Conceptual tells a story = Mr. Popular and workaholic

    

• The next glimpse of who the photographer TRULY is will be exposed during the first meetup/interview. (This is very important) You can validate if who you thought the photographer is via the website is accurate in person.

• Was he/she on time?
  • On Time = Workaholic
  • Late = Slacker
• Was there eye contact at all times?
  • Eyes locked = Mr. Popular
  • Minimal eye contact = Nerd
• Did the photographer pay for the dinner or coffee?
  • Dutch = Slacker and A-hole
  • Treat = Mr. Popular and workaholic
• Were there any awkward silent times?
  • Crickets = Nerd and Follower
  • Always a great conversation = Mr. Popular
• Did the photographer make you feel at ease?
  • Like Family = Mr. Popular
  • Rival = A-hole
• Was there small talk before business or straight to business?
  • All Business = A-hole, Nerd and workaholic
  • Business and Pleasure = Mr.Popular and workaholic

If you are still not 100% of the photographer, then schedule an engagement session and get a taste of how your photographer will be during your special day.  Pay attention to the signs below.

• How does the photographer give direction?
  • Clear and concise = Workaholic and Nerd
  • Confusing = Slacker
• Where does the photographer take you on the engagement session?
  • Backyard = Slacker
  • 1^st place we met = Workaholic and Mr. Popular
• Did the photographer scout the location first?
  • Nope = Slacker
  • Special place just for you = Workaholic and Mr. Popular
• Does the photographer yell?
  • Never = Mr. Popular
  • I am deaf now = A- hole
• Do you see signs of frustration?
  • Understanding = Mr. Popular
  • Don’t give me that look = A-hole

Again these are the signs that I’ve observed and worked for me. Results may vary.

IDENTIFY THE STYLE  (Timeless/Traditional, Artistic/Edgy and Photojournalistic)

Create a numbering system and tally up the numbers to determine the true photography style of the photographer

• Look at entire portfolio and isolate a trend in their photography style.
  • Do you see a lot of images in black & white (Timeless photography style) or do you see a lot of color in the majority of the images. (Edgy photography style)
  • Do the majority of the images look good black and white? (Timeless photography style)
  • Do you see a lot of leading lines in the images? (Can be applied to all photography styles)
  • Do the images seem soft and dreamy to you? (Timeless photography)
  • Are the majority of the images posed (Timeless and/Edgy or candid photography styles (Photojournalistic)?
• Now Tally up the number of images that fit into each defined style to isolate the true  photography style.

If you know what type of wedding photography style you are looking for, then this process will help narrow down your list of potential wedding photographers.
