let me first give you some background on the photo shoot for the hair salon in Burbank. The purpose of this shoot is to provide an owner of a Hair Salon in Burbank some new images for Salon collateral that communicate the vision and the brand of the Hair Salon.

For this shoot, I focused on the name of the hair salon in Burbank ”My Bella Color Studio”.

Since the salon specializes on hair color with I feel are the best hair colorist in Burbank, I scoured the Internet for inspiration.  I typed “Hair Colorist” in google and selected to view images and none of the hair colorist images popped out. So I had to dig deeper and just concentrate on “color”.

I came up with a few concepts but the next photography concept I presented was a “Mad Colorist” concept. Think Mad scientist but instead of test tubes and beakers you will see hair color mixing bowls and hair color bottles. This photography concept for the hair salon, communicates the craft and also provides for stimulating imagery. The owner of the hair salon in burbank was all for the concept and so was my friend and personal hair stylist Grace of grace of beauty that is apart of the My Bella Color Studio team.

Below is my favorite image from the beauty salon mad scientist concept. You will see Grace of Grace of beauty as the main subject in this image depicted as a Mad colorist waiting to mix some color for your hair.

As stated on the previous installment, after the main concept was executed the beauty salon needed some solo, group and action portraits.

Below you will see one of my favorite action solo images on of the team members of the beauty salon in Burbank.

The next image I want to share with you is another fun action solo image of another member of the beauty salon in Burbank named Sai.

First off I have to say that this was by far the longest photo shoot I’ve ever completed.

Let me first give you some background on the photo shoot for the hair salon in Burbank. The purpose of this shoot is to provide an owner of a hair salon in Burbank some new images for Salon collateral that communicate the vision and the brand of the Hair Salon.

Before every shoot, I have my clients fill out a  creative brief questionnaire  to help with the concept creation process and that is no different for a local hair salon in Burbank.

For this shoot, I focused on the name of the hair salon in Burbank ”My Bella Color Studio”.

Since the salon specializes on hair color with I feel are the best hair colorist in Burbank, I scoured the Internet for inspiration.  I typed “Hair Colorist” in google and selected to view images and none of the hair colorist images popped out. So I had to dig deeper and just concentrate on “color” to help illustrate the hair salon in Burbank specialty.

With the help of a new app Moxtra that is kind of like pinterest but the application allows you to write notes on the images, drawings and even collaborate with other users, I was able to come up with and organize a few concepts that fit “My Bella Color Studio” concept shoot that will surely help the hair salon in Burbank stand out and hopefully communicate the salon as cool, trendy and most importantly the best hair colorists in Burbank.

The first concept that came to mind is something similar to the Indian color festival, which involves the throwing of the color powder. I brought this up with the hair salon owner and wasn’t really excited about the photography concept due to the mess it would create.  I can respect that.  I’ll just have to save that execution for another project.

So the next photography concept I presented was a “Mad Colorist” concept. Think Mad scientist but instead of test tubes and beakers you will see hair color mixing bowls and hair color bottles. This photography concept for the hair salon, communicates the craft and also provides for stimulating imagery. The owner of the hair salon in burbank was all for the concept and so was my friend and personal hair stylist Grace of grace of beauty that is apart of the My Bella Color Studio team.

Ok great. Now that the primary concept is established, we needed some basic solo, group and environmental hair salon portraits. So for the group shot the owner of the hair salon in Burbank liked a Beatles cover so for one of the group shots we used a Beatles image as inspiration.

Since initially it was only going to be three hair salon team members, I immediately thought of the Charles Angels’ iconic cover pose. Which I hope you recognize from the Teaser image below. Please comment and let me know you like the image and or like me on Facebook and a plus 1 on Google plus.

EDM ED m I don’t know how Electronic Dance Music acronym is configured.

All I know is that EDM is what is hot right now in the DJ scene.

It’s today’s DJ music. You turn on the radio and if you are tuned in Los Angeles then you are listening to power 106 and what type of Dj music do you hear? EDM right?

Some might say EDM is just another form of trance and I guess EDM could be communicated in that way since when I first was exposed to EDM from my DJ friend DJ Taek, it was from a new dj set he created and after listening to a few minutes of his Dj mix I responded, “Hey this is like another form of Trance”. If you do listen to some of the bass lines of EDM there are a lot of commonalities to Trance.

Enough with my recollection on how I was first introduced to the once question, “What is EDM”?

I want to talk about a new product offering idea I am bouncing around. The idea revolves around providing artists like DJ Taek a website tailored to them at a low cost? All the artist will have to do is commission me to photograph them to build assets for their website. I will then take the images of the artist DJ, EDM DJ etc. and configure a wordpress template without charge.

Again there are going to be limitations as I will have the final say on the options of themes to utilize for the website etc.

This same execution is what I used for a local EDM DJ named DJ Taek. DJ Taek of Los Angeles right now is bedroom DJ that spins EDM and mashups.

So in my concept for this Bedroom EDM Dj, I wanted to first create an image that communicates a few main keywords. Some people might say you don’t need a DJ photographer, but if you want to be taken seriously you need to be perceived as a professional.

1. Bedroom DJ (visualized with the use of a turntable and records making out a form of a DJ laying in bed while wearing headphones to listen to his own music.
2. Night Time (Use of a cooler color temperature) Moonlight was created with the use of one flash on the window camera right bottom to mimic a full moons rays hitting the inner door frame. Another flash was used to create the moon spotlight shooting through the window look.

There are also other elements in the image that help communicate the night time feel such as the area of light shining above the headboard that looks like it is displaying shadows from the blinds.

If you look to the night stand, you will notice a videophone with the time of 2:25AM which is supposed to give the indication that it is really late. In actuality that was the real time of the shoot. Yes, it was a long night.

So that is how I executed his main conceptual image to be used for future CD covers and now his website.

With any artist an identifiable brand is a must and for an EDM DJ even more so due to the fact of the increased popularity of EDM there are more and more DJ’s out there.

So our niche for DJ Taek is that he is an EDM Bedroom DJ practicing countless hours in his garage. It’s key to have a DJ photographer that can successfully communicate your message through the images.

Which brings us to the final set of images of DJ Taek for his website that is composed of him in the actual act of being an EDM Dj.

First let’s analyze EDM music and what colors speak EDM. So I simply did a google search for colors at club EDM music and then I came across this video below:

The latter part of the video I was really attracted to the blue’s and purples and that is how I came up with the color scheme of blue and light purplish pink.

For the portrait I used 3 lights. Two edge lights with each gelled with either a red or blue gel and the one main light camera right at 45 degrees from the subject to create that timeless Rembrandt look where there is a triangle on the shadow side of the face. Does your DJ photographer take these details into consideration before capturing your portrait?

Now you tell me. When you look at these images do you get a sense that the subject is an EDM DJ? Since you saw that video above, there is that frame of reference on the type of vibe the image should be to effectively communicate EDM bedroom DJ.

Yes, I am riding my Dahon bike again.

I know I should be exercising more, but I’ve just been so busy. I do plan to ride my Dahon bike at least once a week and build up from there. As you can see from the images of my Dahon Ciao P8 throughout this post, I’ve already started to take it up to locations for potential photo shoots.

Yes, I do own a foldable bike. You might ask my I decided to purchase a foldable bike and a Dahon bike for that matter.

Well let me tell you a little story on why I decided to purchase a foldable Dahon bike.

It all started a few years ago when I lived in Santa Monica. If you are familiar with Santa Monica it is a city filled with Prius and Bicycle Enthusiasts. I think it might be safe that Santa Monica is an eco friendly city.  I also believe Santa Monica is notorious for their lack of parking.

Well living in Santa Monica alone wasn’t excuse enough to purchase a foldable Dahon bike.  What helped the buying decision was the fact that I lived only a mile away from work and was able to receive some money back from work if I surrendered my parking pass.  So I said to myself, why don’t I buy a bicycle and surrender my parking pass and with the money I get back could fund my bicycle. So it was like a win win situation.  What I usually do before any major purchase decision is to conduct extensive research. The research process possibly took 2-3 weeks and I decided on a foldable bike and not just any brand but a Dahon bike.

Below are the 5 reasons why I decided to go with a foldable Dahon bike specifically the Dahon Ciao P8:

1. Needed a bike that could fit in any trunk and still looks good. (Sometimes I hitch a ride with friends when I ride to work, so I need to make sure I can take my bike with me. I also go location scouting and there are times where the only available parking space is a mile or so from the location I want to scout.
2. Maintenance-free Internal 8 speed hub (I don’t have to worry about getting debris in the gears)
3. Hub Dynamo in the front wheel powers the front headlight.  (Very cool feature and green friendly)
4. Ultra-low step through frame (This allows me to easily get on and off the bike)
5. Puncture proof tires ( I don’t have to worry about accidently running over sharp objects)

Well, I hope my purchase of a foldable Dahon bike is now justified and maybe I’ll see you on Dahon bike.

When the landscape looks as beautiful as this in Walnut, CA it is very difficult not to take out the camera and capture this beautiful Walnut, CA view.  The lighting for this landscape was perfect. I was able to catch the sunset light as it hit the orange home in Walnut, CA which i wanted to have the most focus in the image. The sunset light allowed me to underexpose the house below the orange house which was not that appealing in this landscape of the homes in Walnut, CA. 

As you can see the homes in Walnut, CA from this view look similar in size.  It is without a doubt the homes in Walnut, CA are beautiful.

The beautiful mountain backdrop also bring great beauty to the homes in Walnut, CA. If you look to the back right of the image you could see the snow top mountains calling for skiers and snowboards alike to take the 1-2 hour trip to the nearest ski resorts.
